Ottawa-Born Songbird

Haunting voice? Check. Dating Justin Vernon of Bon Iver? Check. Songwriter extroardinaire? Check.

Something to add to that shiny list of life achievements for the great folk goddess Kathleen Edwards, is how she absolutely has the ability to make any listener's heart sing. Something about this Canadian songstress really cuts to the core of me, and I'm not sure what it is; her fiery personality, piercingly pure voice, rustic strums and heated riffs that stand behind her inviting melodies might have a little to do with it though.

This song, for instance, was an instant classic for me from the first click of the play button. Off her latest album Voyageur and sounding to me like telelvision/film soundtrack material gold - Kathleen's heavenly hum and fluttering guitar strings have made this undoubtedly one of the most intriguing songs of the new year so far. Emotional, hard-hitting while still so soft - it really encompasses everything that makes Edwards the unique artist she is. Keep an eye on this homeland hero, everybody - she's gearing up to make her biggest waves yet.
